Slime Rancher Review

Genre: First-Person Shooter | Developer: Monomi Park | Release Date: 2017

Published by Monomi Park, the was game was released for Microsoft Windows, Linus, Xbox One, and macOS. The game follows Beatrix LeBeau who travels to the Far, Far Range to make a living at wrangling slimes.

Campaign

Slime Rancher places players in the shoes of Beatrix LeBeau, a spirited rancher who travels light-years away to the Far Far Range, a distant planet filled with colorful, bouncing creatures known as slimes. Told from a first-person perspective, the game is a delightful mix of exploration, farming, and subtle storytelling. While the narrative isn’t deep in the traditional sense, it’s delivered through charming emails and notes left behind by the previous rancher, which gradually peel back layers of Beatrix’s world.

What’s surprisingly effective is how the game builds story through gameplay. Building and managing your ranch, caring for slimes, and discovering the planet’s secrets become part of the narrative. The personal touches, like emails from Beatrix’s friend Casey, give emotional context and humanize the experience. The only real shortcoming is the lack of deep character interaction. There are interesting personalities hinted at, but they’re confined to text and never really brought into the world interactively.

Still, the campaign is engaging in its own quiet, sandboxy way. Clocking in dozens of hours easily, with vast areas to explore and a satisfying gameplay loop, this is a campaign about creating your own story.

Gameplay

Gameplay is the beating heart of Slime Rancher, and it’s wonderfully addictive. As Beatrix, players use the “Vacpack,” a vacuum-style device, to suck up slimes, food, and materials. They must feed slimes to collect “plorts,” which act as the game’s currency and crafting material. The twist? Mixing plorts can result in more valuable slimes—or if done incorrectly, spawn dangerous “Tarr” slimes that wreak havoc.

The mechanics are intuitive and responsive. Exploration feels rewarding, especially when discovering new slime species or hidden areas. Managing your ranch and deciding which slimes to farm, where to grow food, or how to layout your structures adds a nice layer of strategy. The game also introduces an upgrade system and crafting, keeping players motivated with long-term goals.

Each biome offers a new set of challenges and slimes to interact with, and while backtracking is required, it’s rarely a chore thanks to the relaxing gameplay loop and incentives tied to exploration. There's also a variety of game modes and objectives, from rancher requests to customization and crafting features.

For anyone who enjoys farming sims, creature collecting, or light-hearted exploration, Slime Rancher is a delightful blend of all three.

Production

Visually, Slime Rancher shines. The aesthetic leans heavily into vibrant, cheerful design. The environment is colorful, with diverse biomes that make exploration feel fresh and exciting. The slime designs themselves are pure joy—each species has its own charm and quirky animations, making them feel like living, bouncing pets. The lighting is soft and warm, matching the game’s chill tone.

The soundtrack is mellow, catchy, and fits the tone of the game perfectly. The ranch theme, in particular, is a standout—evoking feelings of peace and adventure. It's the kind of music that enhances the gameplay without ever overwhelming it. Sound effects also deserve praise. The slimes make adorable gurgles and bounces, and each action, from sucking items into the Vacpack to plorts hitting the collector, is satisfying.

There are no glaring technical issues, and the game runs smoothly across platforms. Overall, it’s a production that knows exactly what it wants to be—simple, cozy, and immersive.
