The Wolf Among Us Review

Genre: Episodic Interactive Drama | Developer: Telltale Games | Release Date: 2013

Based on Bill Willingham’s Fables comic book series, players control Bigby Wolf, the sheriff of Fabletown, as he along with Snow White investigate a murder, but stumbles upon a conspiracy involving the mysterious Crooked Man.

Campaign

The Wolf Among Us tells a gripping, neo-noir story set in the world of Fabletown, where fairy-tale characters live hidden among humans. The narrative revolves around Bigby Wolf, the sheriff of Fabletown, as he investigates a series of mysterious events tied to the sinister Crooked Man. The plot gradually reveals a dark conspiracy, with Bigby at the center, trying to keep order in a town full of morally complex characters. The slow pace of the story serves to build tension, carefully fleshing out both Bigby’s character and his relationships with others. His interactions with Snow White, Fabletown’s director of operations, provide a strong contrast—her optimism and practicality balancing his cynical, hard-edged personality.

The story's strength lies in how well the characters are developed, with Bigby being both a gruff and empathetic character, while the supporting cast brings additional layers of complexity to the world. Despite its deliberate pace, the story becomes increasingly suspenseful as secrets unfold and the stakes rise. However, some plot points could benefit from more depth and clarity. Overall, The Wolf Among Us does an excellent job of immersing players in its world and keeping them invested in the unfolding mystery, even if the story sometimes feels a bit slow.

Gameplay

The gameplay of The Wolf Among Us blends traditional point-and-click adventure elements with the modern twist of quick-time events (QTEs) and branching narrative choices. Players control Bigby as he investigates crimes in Fabletown, interacting with various characters and exploring a variety of linear environments. The game’s strength lies in its branching storylines—your choices throughout the game influence the direction of the narrative, leading to different outcomes and making each playthrough unique. The dialogue choices are crucial and provide players with the opportunity to shape Bigby’s character, determining how others view him.

The quick-time events, which involve pressing specific buttons during tense moments, add a sense of urgency and keep the gameplay engaging. While these QTEs are not difficult, they do increase immersion and provide a more cinematic experience. However, the game’s linear environments limit exploration, and the occasional gameplay choices feel less impactful when certain decisions lead to similar outcomes.

One of the main drawbacks of The Wolf Among Us is the technical issues. Long loading screens can break the pacing, and graphical glitches like unsynced voiceovers or delayed animations can pull players out of the experience. These issues, while not frequent, are frustrating when they do occur, especially considering the high-quality voice performances and the overall production value. Despite these flaws, the branching storylines and character interactions ensure the game remains highly replayable, as players are drawn back to see the different consequences of their choices.

Production

Visually, The Wolf Among Us impresses with its stunning neo-noir art direction. The game features a unique comic-book style that captures the dark, gritty world of Fabletown perfectly. The character designs and environments are richly detailed, evoking the atmosphere of a detective noir story while adding fantastical elements. The visual style blends the traditional Telltale Games format with the distinctive graphic novel-inspired art of the Fables comics, resulting in a striking, stylized look that holds up well.

Unfortunately, the graphics are marred by occasional glitches, including freezing during loading screens and occasional animation delays. These technical issues can detract from the otherwise excellent presentation. The camera angles and cutscenes are cinematic, enhancing the tension and drama of key moments, though they sometimes feel a little static compared to more modern adventure games.

The soundtrack is a highlight, creating a dark and moody atmosphere that complements the game’s narrative. The music seamlessly weaves through key moments, enhancing the suspense and drama. The voice performances are superb, with Adam Harrington’s portrayal of Bigby standing out as the emotional core of the game. Each character has a distinct, well-performed voice that fits their personality, making the interactions feel genuine and engaging.

Despite its technical flaws, the game’s strong visual and audio design elevates the experience, making the world of The Wolf Among Us feel alive and immersive.

The Verdict

The Wolf Among Us is a fantastic adaptation of the Fables comics, with a suspenseful story, memorable characters, and great voice performances. The Wolf Among Us gets 4 out of 5.
