Genre: Beat 'Em Up | Developer: Bamtang Games | Release Date: 2017
Published by Bandai Namco Entertainment and released for Windows, Xbox One, and Playstation4, and follows the Power Rangers who spring into action after a series of mysterious towers have been placed all around Angel Grove.
Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: Mega Battle doesn’t have much to offer in terms of campaign length or depth. The game consists of only six stages, which can be completed in a short amount of time. While the story takes some liberties with the Power Rangers' origin, it lacks engagement or meaningful development.
The plot is as basic as it gets—evil forces have arrived, and the Rangers must stop them. There are no real twists, stakes, or character-driven moments to make the journey compelling. The campaign does allow players to choose from the original Rangers, each with slight differences, but it doesn't make up for the overall lack of depth.
While local co-op is available for up to four players, the absence of online multiplayer is a glaring omission that hurts the game's longevity. Ultimately, the campaign feels more like an afterthought than a well-crafted experience.
Rating: 2 out of 5
The gameplay is fun at first, with simple yet satisfying beat-em-up mechanics reminiscent of Castle Crashers. Players start in their normal forms and can build up energy to morph, which is a nice touch. Attacks are basic, with light, heavy, and ranged options, and combat is enhanced by a leveling system where players earn experience to unlock new combos and abilities. However, the enemy AI is disappointingly simplistic—many foes wander aimlessly before attacking, making fights feel less dynamic.
The Megazord battles attempt to mix things up, but they are a mixed bag. First, players control the Zord in Tank Mode, shooting at weak spots. Then, in its full form, battles rely on quick-time events, which feel underwhelming for what should be the most exciting part of the game. While the talent tree offers some customization, the gameplay quickly becomes repetitive. The lack of enemy variety and mission structure doesn’t help, and without any significant innovation, the game loses its initial charm fast.
Rating: 2 out of 5
Graphically, Mega Battle doesn’t push any boundaries. The 2D side-scrolling art style is colorful and vibrant, and some character animations—like the Putty expressions—add charm. However, for a Power Rangers game released in 2017, the visuals feel outdated, as if they belong in a 1990s arcade title. The cutscenes are functional but uninspired, lacking the cinematic flair expected from a modern adaptation of such an iconic franchise.
The music contains nostalgic nods to the original series, which is a highlight, but outside of that, the soundtrack is forgettable. Sound effects are decent, but the absence of voice acting is a huge missed opportunity—having the original cast lend their voices would have added much-needed personality. Overall, while the game captures some of the show's spirit, its presentation feels underwhelming.
Rating: 2 out of 5
Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: Mega Battle had potential but fails to deliver a truly engaging experience. While the gameplay is initially fun, it quickly becomes repetitive. The campaign is short, the story is weak, the graphics are outdated, and the DLC is a letdown. Despite its nostalgic appeal and decent soundtrack, the game ultimately feels uninspired. Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: Mega Battle gets 2 out of 5.
