Campaign
Dead by Daylight doesn’t follow a traditional story mode but instead weaves its narrative through character lore, backstories, and environmental storytelling. The premise is straightforward: a group of survivors finds themselves abducted and trapped in a series of nightmarish arenas where they must escape while being hunted by relentless killers. The main antagonist, a mysterious and malevolent force known as The Entity, feeds off fear and suffering, using the killers as its enforcers to capture and sacrifice the survivors.
While the story isn’t delivered through a campaign, the most compelling aspect is undoubtedly the killers. Each killer has a unique and often gruesome backstory, adding depth to their presence in the game. Some were once ordinary people driven to madness, while others are supernatural monstrosities with origins shrouded in mystery. These tales make the game world feel more immersive and unsettling, giving players a reason to be invested beyond simple survival. The survivors, while somewhat generic in comparison, also have lore that connects them to the Entity’s realm. The fragmented storytelling approach might not appeal to those who prefer a structured narrative, but for horror enthusiasts, the eerie mystery and grim fates of the characters add a layer of intrigue.
Gameplay
The core gameplay of Dead by Daylight is simple yet effective: four players assume the role of survivors while one plays as the killer. The survivors’ goal is to repair generators scattered across the map to power escape gates or use a hatch that appears when only one player remains. Meanwhile, the killer must hunt them down, injure them, and ultimately hook them on sacrificial altars for the Entity.
Survivors rely on teamwork, stealth, and quick thinking. They can vault over obstacles, hide, and use various items like medkits, toolboxes, and flashlights to aid in their escape. The game encourages cooperative play—while working together increases the chances of survival, lone wolves typically meet grim fates. The strategic depth comes from planning escape routes, distracting the killer, and using perks that provide unique advantages.
Killers, on the other hand, offer a different experience. Each has unique abilities and playstyles, ranging from teleportation to setting traps, making every match feel distinct. Some killers feel more balanced than others, with certain abilities being far deadlier. However, all require skill, map awareness, and strategic thinking to be effective.
The controls are smooth, and the game’s performance is generally stable, with only minor issues such as connectivity problems impacting gameplay. The repetitive nature of repairing generators and escaping can become tedious over time, but the variety of killers, maps, and frequent DLC additions keep things fresh. The replay value is strong, especially when playing with friends, as communication and coordination drastically change the experience.

Production
Visually, Dead by Daylight does what it needs to do. The graphics aren’t groundbreaking, but they effectively create a tense and eerie atmosphere. The maps are well-designed, offering a variety of detailed environments—from decrepit asylums to foggy forests and abandoned factories. The level diversity enhances the horror-movie aesthetic, making each match feel like a different terrifying scenario. The lighting design is particularly strong, using darkness and shadows to create an unsettling ambiance.
The game lacks extensive cutscenes, as it doesn’t follow a linear story, but the in-game animations and environmental storytelling compensate for this. Character models, particularly the killers, are well-crafted, each boasting unique and often horrifying designs that reflect their backstories. Survivors, while less visually striking, have a variety of cosmetic options that add personality.
As for the audio, the sound design does its job effectively. While the music isn’t memorable, it’s not meant to be—the game relies more on ambient sounds and audio cues to enhance tension. The distant hum of generators, the sudden sting of the Entity’s presence, and the eerie killer themes contribute to the game’s atmosphere. The sound of footsteps, heavy breathing, and heartbeat indicators add to the immersion, making every encounter with the killer nerve-wracking.

The Verdict
In the end, Dead by Daylight might be a blatant rip-off of Friday the 13th: The Game, but it undeniably refines and improves upon the formula. While repetitive objectives and occasional balancing issues exist, the game’s core mechanics, cooperative gameplay, and diverse killer roster make for an addictive multiplayer experience. If you enjoy horror-themed asymmetrical games, this one is worth a shot. Dead by Daylight gets 4 out of 5.
