X-Men Legends Review

Genre: Action Role-Playing | Developer: Raven Software | Release Date: 2004

Published by Activision the game was released for the GameCube, PlayStation 2, and Xbox. The game follows the X-Men who must protect a young mutant with the ability to summon and control volcanic activity.

Campaign

X-Men Legends delivers an engaging story that starts small but gradually expands into an epic conflict involving the Brotherhood of Mutants and the fate of mutantkind. The game follows the recruitment of a young mutant, Alison Crestmere (aka Magma), as she joins the X-Men and learns to control her abilities. Through her journey, players experience the X-Men’s ongoing battle against Magneto and his forces, culminating in a large-scale showdown that brings together many iconic characters from the franchise.

The plot effectively balances personal character moments with high-stakes superhero action, featuring well-executed subplots like Wolverine’s rivalry with Sabretooth, Cyclops and Jean Grey’s relationship, and tensions within the Brotherhood. While the core narrative is engaging, it sometimes feels like an excuse to shuttle players from one mission to the next rather than a fully fleshed-out story.

The roster, while solid, feels a bit limited for an X-Men game. Key characters like Wolverine, Storm, Cyclops, and Nightcrawler are present, but some fan-favorites are missing or only appear in minor roles. Still, the variety of playable mutants allows for different team compositions and strategies. However, the game introduces a new character Alison Crestmere whom a lot of the story revolves around and she is a great addition to the team. She has personality, personal growth, and good interactions with the other characters.

Overall, X-Men Legends does a great job of immersing players in the X-Men universe, blending comic book storytelling with RPG elements. Despite some pacing issues and a roster that could have been larger, the campaign is a strong foundation for the game.

Gameplay

At its core, X-Men Legends is an action RPG with real-time combat, allowing players to control a team of four mutants, switching between them on the fly. The game supports both single-player and up to four-player co-op, making it a fun experience whether you’re playing solo or with friends. The ability to assemble and customize a squad of X-Men adds strategic depth, as different characters have unique abilities that can complement each other in battle.

The RPG elements are well-implemented, with characters gaining experience points, leveling up, and unlocking new powers. Players can assign skill points to enhance abilities, choose different costumes, and equip gear to improve stats. This level of customization keeps things fresh, especially when replaying the game with different team compositions.

However, the gameplay does have its drawbacks. The combat, while satisfying, can become repetitive, as many missions feel like they follow the same structure—clear an area, fight waves of enemies, move to the next objective, and repeat. Enemy variety is decent but not particularly diverse, and some sections drag due to this repetition.

The game does offer a good amount of unlockable content, including additional characters and bonus missions, adding replay value. The co-op mode is a highlight, making battles more engaging and allowing players to strategize together. Playing solo, the AI does an acceptable job of controlling teammates, though it’s not always the most reliable.

Despite some repetition, X-Men Legends offers a solid mix of RPG depth and action-packed combat, making it one of the better X-Men gaming experiences.

Production

While X-Men Legends was visually impressive at the time of its release, its graphics have not aged well. Character models appear blocky, textures lack detail, and environments feel somewhat generic and blurry. The game’s art direction leans toward a more comic book-inspired aesthetic, which helps offset the graphical shortcomings, but overall, the visuals lack the polish of later games in the genre.

The camera can also be a frustration, especially in co-op mode. It often struggles to keep all players on-screen, leading to occasional confusion during battles. The isometric perspective works well for large-scale fights but sometimes makes it difficult to appreciate finer details.

Where the game truly shines is in its audio design. The soundtrack is intense and energetic, adding weight to the action and making battles feel more dynamic. The voice acting is also a pleasant surprise, featuring strong performances that bring the characters to life. Patrick Stewart reprises his role as Professor X, lending credibility to the game’s story, while other cast members do a great job capturing the personalities of the X-Men.

Despite its aging graphics and occasional camera issues, X-Men Legends still holds up in terms of sound design and atmosphere. The game’s production values, particularly in voice acting and music, elevate the experience beyond its visual limitations.

X-Men Legends gets 3 out of 5.
